As a founder or C Level, you’ve poured your heart and soul into building your brand. You know your story, your products, and your customers better than anyone. But what happens when someone asks an AI like ChatGPT or Google’s new AI Overviews about your business?
The scary truth is, the AI might get it wrong. It could misrepresent your services, invent facts, or miss the unique voice you’ve worked so hard to cultivate.
There’s a new, simple tool you can use to fight back and take control. It’s called llms.txt, and it’s not a “keep out” sign for AI—it’s a treasure map that guides them straight to the good stuff. Let’s dive into why you need one and how you can set it up in less time than it takes to drink your morning flat white.
Why You, as a Founder, Can’t Afford to Ignore This
For a lean business, this isn’t just a “nice-to-have.” It’s crucial.
You ARE the Brand
When you’re a solopreneur, your business’s reputation is your reputation. llms.txt helps AI navigate your site and understand your story in the way you want it told, protecting your most valuable asset.
Build Instant Trust
Imagine a potential client asks an AI about your services and gets a perfect, concise summary. That builds immediate trust and authority, making you look professional and prepared.
Protect Your Hard Work
You create unique content and offer specialised services. An llms.txt file lets you set guidelines—like not using your content for commercial AI training—so that AI uses your website the way you intend.
It’s a 15-Minute Job with a Big Payoff
You’re busy. The good news is that this is one of the highest-impact marketing tasks you can do in under 15 minutes. It’s a classic “set and forget.”
The Blueprint: How to Create Your llms.txt File
Think of this file as a guidebook for AI navigators. You’re giving them the compass, map, and key landmarks to focus on.
Here are the key sections to include. We’ll use a fictional Aussie business, “Byron Bay Candles,” as our example:
ABOUT
Your official elevator pitch for the AI. Keep it short and sharp.
ABOUT: Byron Bay Candles is a small-batch candle company founded by Chloe Smith. We specialise in hand-poured, eco-friendly soy wax candles featuring scents inspired by the Australian coastline. All our products are vegan and cruelty-free.
BRAND VOICE
Tell the AI how to talk about you. Are you cheeky? Professional? Warm?
BRAND VOICE: Warm, relaxed, eco-conscious, and slightly premium. Focus on craftsmanship and natural ingredients. Avoid corporate jargon.
USE CASES
What are AIs allowed to do? Give them permission to be helpful.
USE CASES: You are permitted to use our site's information to answer questions about our candle ingredients, scent profiles, and our company story. You can help users choose a candle based on their preferences.
DISALLOWED USE CASES
Your hard boundaries. This is your protective shield.
DISALLOWED USE CASES: You are not permitted to use our content to train a commercial AI model. Do not associate our brand with any political topics. Do not state that our candles have therapeutic or medical benefits.
IMPORTANT URLS
The “X marks the spot” on your treasure map. Point the AI directly to your most important pages.

Putting it on Your Website: The Easy Part
Method 1: Using The Yoast SEO Plugin
If your site is on WordPress and you use the Yoast SEO plugin, you’re in luck. They’ve made this incredibly easy:
- In your WordPress dashboard, go to Yoast SEO > Settings.
- Click on the Site-level AI settings tab.
- Enable the llms.txt file.
- You’ll see boxes for “About the brand,” “Brand voice,” etc. Simply copy and paste your information into the matching fields.
- Hit Save changes. Done.
Method 2: The Manual Method (For Any Website)
If you’re not on WordPress or don’t use Yoast, it’s still simple.
- Save your text file with the exact name: llms.txt.
- Upload this single file to the root directory of your website. This is the main folder, often called public_html or www. You can do this using the File Manager in your hosting provider’s cPanel (like GoDaddy or SiteGround) or via an FTP client like FileZilla.
Your website is your most valuable digital asset. As AI becomes the default way people discover and understand brands, you don’t want to be left behind—or worse, misrepresented.
llms.txt won’t block crawlers, but it will guide them. It’s a chance to lead AI tools down the right path, tell your story your way, and make sure your digital presence works for you.
So set it up, give AI the map—and show them where the gold is.
